When your driving instructor tells you that you are ready for your test, it’s great news and there are a few things you can do to help make sure you ace your driving test.

Be prepared for your driving test!

Make sure you find all your documents 4 days before, this gives you enough time to reschedule your test and not lose your fee if you can’t find everything you need. If you’re not sure what you need ask your driving instructor for their advice.

Get a driving lesson before your test

We actually insist on this as it helps our instructors to lower your anxiety about the test. It also means that we can get to the test centre in plenty of time, to allow yourself a break from driving, use the toilet, grab a drink or go for a little walk. All these things will help to prepare for your upcoming test. This driving isn’t to learn anything, just to help you prepare.

Be prepared to go straight on, left or right

If you’re not 100% sure which way the examiner has asked you to go then go a safe way. For example if you’re approaching a junction and you’re not sure then just make sure you go the way the lane allows.

Another example is if you’re in the wrong lane approaching a junction and the thought of changing lane is worrying or you don’t have the time. Just go the way the lane you are in says to go.

Let the Examiner make the decision

If you do make a mistake remember you’re allowed up to 15 driver faults (Minors) during your test. The majority of faults are going to be minor faults so try not to dwell on them and just move on. If it was a Minor or Major fault isn’t your decision so don’t let it cause you to make a fault because you’re still thinking about it.

Listen to your Driving instructor

Whilst the role of your Driving instructor is not to command obedience and for you to follow their orders, they are the test expert in the car.

Having delivered countless driving lessons and taken lots of people to driving test success, they know what’s what and how to help you with things you may struggle with.

Remember your driving instructor has nothing to gain by letting you go to a test that they don’t think you’ll pass.

Have another look at your theory test

It might be a while since you passed your theory test, so now is a great time to refresh your knowledge. Remember the test is based on the laws and rules set out in the Highway Code and whilst your instructor will have probably been keeping you up to date it’s worth revisiting it to refresh your memory.

Check your mirrors and get off the accelerator

Exactly that, when you see a hazard or potential hazard. Check your mirrors and get off the accelerator to allow yourself time to figure out what’s going on. This means you’ll take your time when appropriate, don’t start driving slowly all the time holding everyone up though.

Don’t try to pass before you’re ready

Don’t take your test before you feel ready! The last thing you want to do is not be confident, manage to pass and then be too scared to actually drive anywhere.

Don’t skip lessons

We recommend that when your driving test is booked that you continue with driving lessons as normal and that you do not reduce the lessons on the lead up to your test.

Driving is a learned skill, so practice makes perfect, skipping lessons to save money might mean your skills are not at the peak when it comes to test day, so it might cost you a lot more in the long run.

Keep the faith

Please, please, please remember that not everyone passes first time and whilst we want everyone to pass first time not everyone does.

Social media will have you believe everyone does and it’s all rosy, but honestly 55% ish of all people do not pass their test and that’s ok too! You can re-take it, so don’t let it put you off.

Finally good luck with your driving test.
